LaGuardia Airport Terminal B Redevelopment
This multi-billion project is part of a new vision for the overall redevelopment of LaGuardia Airport in Queens, New York. When complete, it will improve the traveling experience for millions of people and be a major economic generator for the region. At the forefront of this project is a commitment to sustainability and an approach that minimizes environmental impacts.
Sustainability fun facts
- Our team recycled 21,604 tons of concrete from the demolition of the original Terminal B parking garage and used roughly five million pounds of this recycled concrete on an adjacent jobsite.
- Designing the facility with a new baggage handling system, sophisticated building envelope, solar water heaters, large skylights, and wall-to-ceiling windows reduces the need for lighting and results in a 19 percent net energy savings.
- The new terminal utilizes efficient fixtures and rain water harvesting to reduce water use by 40 percent.
- Through design optimization, such as reducing the number of piles, our project team reduced the project’s embodied carbon (the amount of greenhouse gases emitted during the production of materials) by 10 percent.
- In 2017, the project team established the Connect Committee, which volunteers at local events throughout the year and has initiated dozens of community programs such as classes that teach children the fundamentals of 3D virtual design.
