NEW YORK, NY – Skanska, a leading global construction and development firm, announced that it has been honored as a recipient of Procore’s 2024 Groundbreaker Awards in the Excellence in Innovation. Procore Technologies, Inc. is the leading global provider of construction management software. The Groundbreaker Awards celebrate the companies, projects, and individuals that drive excellence across the construction industry.
This recognition further solidifies Skanska's position as a trailblazer and industry leader in the construction sector.
Skanska USA Building’s innovation efforts are reflected in several industry-changing technologies and processes that help move the industry forward, including:
- Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing – Through initiatives like the VDC Knowledge Network, Tech Concierge Network, TECHconnect Community, and Drone Network, Skanska USA Building empowers its teams to share insights, solve problems collaboratively, and implement technology-driven solutions that scale across projects.
- AI-Powered Tools – Skanska has developed multiple custom AI solutions in-house, including the Operational Risk Sidekick, Safety Sidekick, and Skanska Sidekick. These tools, built on the latest GPT-4o model, provide employees with instant access to project insights, best practices and critical OSHA codes, reducing time spent searching for information and improving decision-making in the field while protecting proprietary information.
- Data-Informed Decision-Making – Through proprietary tools like Skanska Metriks® and the Project Health Dashboard, Skanska has developed a comprehensive suite of data solutions. Metriks® leverages historical data from our extensive project portfolio to optimize budgets and drive informed decisions during preconstruction, while the Project Health Dashboard, provides real-time insights into financial, schedule, and safety data, improving cost certainty and proactively reducing risks.
- Emerging Technologies – Construction tech has grown 10x in the past decade. To harness this potential, Skanska implemented the Tech Enablement Process to evaluate, pilot, and scale emerging technologies. This process streamlines legal, IT, and data security protocols for quicker, secure integration of third-party technology into project operations. Since its 2023 launch, Skanska has evaluated over 70 tools, including VR headsets, AI models, and 4D logistics planning software. Skanska's partnership with Resolve VR saved $1 million by eliminating rework on a New York healthcare project. Using Dusty Robotics reduced the project timeline by three weeks and rework by 75%. Additionally, Skanska adopted 360 Cameras, Thermal Imaging Drones, and DroneDeploy to enhance progress tracking, inspections, safety, and site documentation.
“We are incredibly proud and honored to receive this recognition,” said Anita Nelson, chief strategy officer at Skanska USA Building. “At Skanska, innovation with impact is at the heart of everything we do, and we are constantly pushing boundaries to enhance how we build, work, collaborate, and deliver outstanding results for our clients, communities, and with partners like Procore.”
