Step inside the DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital

Skanska built the new DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital in Portland, Oregon. This new, 63,520 square-foot, three-story building expands the home of the animal hospital which has been serving the local community for more than 50 years.

“This expansion has had a meaningful impact on both the City of Portland and the immediate neighborhood,” says Trevor Wyckoff, executive vice president – general manager at Skanska. “It's a long-term investment in public service, animal welfare and the continued strengthening of a much-loved Portland institution.”

With this new building, DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency Hospital (DoveLewis) can grow its specialty departments while creating more room for the in-demand urgent care, emergency care and critical care services at its existing 24/7 facility across the street.

As a result, animal patients can seamlessly transition care from one department to the next, clients receive care alongside their beloved animal companions, and staff have the space, equipment, and expertise of their colleagues to treat the most critically injured and ill patients in the region.

A modern-day veterinary hospital, the new building has added three surgery suites, a dozen exam rooms and eight specialty treatment rooms, including radiology, internal medicine and cardiology. This new facility aims to reduce wait times and stress for pets and families.

The state-of-the-art surgery suites are an essential addition to the new hospital space. They enhance DoveLewis’ surgical capabilities, ensuring that staff members can perform complex procedures with precision and efficiency. With advanced equipment and technology, DoveLewis is now equipped to address a wide range of complex medical conditions.

The new facility houses advanced digital X-ray equipment and a 3 Tesla MRI machine – the only one in the state of Oregon. This cutting-edge equipment is essential for diagnosing and treating complex emergencies such as spinal cord injuries, broken backs and traumatic brain injuries. This machine can create high-resolution images faster than standard MRIs, which means less time for animals to be inside the scanner and under anesthesia.

The new building features an 1,800 square-foot community room that is designed for DoveLewis staff to share practical knowledge and experiences with both local and national audiences. This versatile space enables the hospital to host regular continuing education training sessions.
