The constructors of the new British Airways Terminal at JFK awarded this pile installation contract to Underpinning & Foundation Skanska. To construct the foundation for this new facility, Underpinning drove more than 1,300, 150-ton capacity piles and more than 500 timber piles to support utilities and light towers. Underpinning recognized that various improvements could be made to the original pile design and submitted a value engineering substitution, which resulted in a 12% cost savings. The work was performed using state-of-the-art hydraulic pile driving equipment built in Finland to Underpinning’s specifications. High-efficiency hydraulic pile hammers, a superior pile type alternate, and a depth of resources that allowed Underpinning to field multiple pieces of equipment all contributed to the success of this project. In addition, the mobility of the pile rigs allowed for rapid installation in the tight confines of the existing terminal and airport roadway system. |
