The firm is currently performing foundation work for AirTrain, the JFK International Airport Light Rail System project on which it had previously performed pile-driving activities. Additional on-airport projects include Reconstruction of the British Airways and American Airlines terminals also at JFK. Other work in progress includes constructing foundations for the AOL Time Warner Building in New York City; the Long Island Expressway/Cross Island Parkway Interchange in Queens, NY; the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway Reconstruction in Queens, NY; the High School for Law Enforcement and Public Safety in Jamaica, NY; and the new Long Island Rail Road/AirTrain Jamaica Station. The firm recently completed work for the acclaimed International Arrivals Building at JFK and at the $1 billion Borgata Hotel and Casino under construction in Atlantic City, NJ. The Borgata job required the driving of 3,600 piles. Underpinning & Foundation has entered other markets outside the New York metropolitan area. Working on the Bay Area Rapid Transit extension from downtown San Francisco to that city’s airport, Underpinning & Foundation utilized new soil improvement techniques to strengthen the soil and eliminate the potential for liquefaction. By dry-mixing lime and cement with the soil, the strength of the ground can be improved. This dry-mix method pioneered by Skanska Sweden and introduced to the U.S. by Underpinning & Foundation in 1996. |
