A $50 million project that included dredging, the relocation of the USS Intrepid to drydock, demolition of existing Pier 86, construction of a new pier extending 800 feet into the Hudson River, erection of 4 stair/elevator towers, as well as park elements such as concrete pavers, shade structures, site utilities and gangways to the USS Intrepid. The pier construction includes driving steel pipe piles and precast concrete pile caps, planks and edge beams. Due to environmental issues concerning the striped bass fish population, the driving of 336 steel pipe piles was restricted to a 6 month driving season.
