Building Information Modeling/ Virtual Design & Construction
Skanska is providing construction management services for this re-glazing project involving the replacement of 6,350 panes of glass making up a 275,000-SF tower visible from just about every spot within Atlanta. More than 600 tons of glass from the existing windows will be recycled as part of the renovation. The project involves very complicated logistics for the movement of material and people during construction in this occupied hotel. Another major aspect of the project is renovating the three-story Sun Dial restaurant that is located at the top of the hotel, 70 stories high. Designed by John Portman in 1976, the hotel is a 73-story tower, topped by the tri-level, revolving Sun Dial Restaurant Bar & View. At 723 feet, The Westin Peachtree Plaza was Atlanta's tallest building until 1987, when it was surpassed by One Atlantic Center. Today, The Westin Peachtree Plaza is the fifth tallest building in Atlanta and remains the tallest hotel in the Western Hemisphere.
The renovation of the Westin Peachtree Plaza has three main goals: 1. Restore the landmark design of the hotel. 2. Follow a construction process that is safe and ensures minimal inconvenience to hotel guests.3. Bring the building exterior up to today’s standards, recreating this beautiful icon for the city. Over the past year and a half, the hotel leadership has worked with consultants, designers, the insurance company and the City of Atlanta to find a solution that would address all these goals. The resulting renovation plan is outstanding, not just for the hotel, but for the city and its skyline.
