Skanska provided preconstruction and construction management at risk services for the James B. Hunt Jr. Library on North Carolina State’s Centennial Campus. Designed by world-renowned architect Snohetta, the library anchors the south side of the campus oval and provides a critical link between the campus and the future Town Center. The 220,000-SF building houses both the Centennial Campus Library and the Institute for Emerging Issues, a think tank that convenes leaders from business, nonprofit organizations, government and higher education.The project also includes a 400-space pre-cast parking deck, infrastructure utilities that will serve future buildings on campus, and the completion of the pedestrian oval, the centerpiece of the Centennial Campus Master Plan.
In addition, the facility incorporates a state-of-the-art, two million volume automated book retrieval system in lieu of typical library stacks allowing for more visually open space throughout the building. Student study, resource, classroom, conference, research, office and food service spaces are also incorporated into the building. The project incorporates a green roof, a highly efficient heating, piping and air conditioning system using chilled beams and raidiant ceiling solar panels that provide hot water for the building. It is LEED® Silver certified.

Outside, the building is covered in a complex curtain wall system, which posed the most challenging aspect of the construction. We pioneered the use of Autodesk BIM 360 Field jobsite management software to track each of the 800 curtain wall units. A bar code was affixed to each curtain wall unit and scanned at three phases: construction prior to shipment, arrival onsite and after installation. The two benefits this provided were that we could track fabrication and installation rates, and we could link each unit’s barcode information to the BIM to facilitate coordination, sequencing and scheduling of the installation. In the digital age, NCSU’s library is redefining the role of the modern library while Skanska’s modern construction techniques are setting industry benchmarks in innovation.
