Skanska was awarded a GMP Contract for preconstruction and construction services for a new two-story, Operations and Maintenance Facility for the Worcester Regional Transit Authority. The facility will replace an existing 84 year old facility. The new 140,000 SF facility will accommodate the existing fleet size and include, at a minimum, office space, fuel bays, wash bays, bus and van storage bays, garage and body shop areas, parts storage, locker rooms and showers, lounge and dispatch center. The garage will be able to store 52 buses and 28 vans. The site will also include a 150-space parking lot and a driver training course. The development of the site is challenging as a manufactured gas plant operated on the property from 1870 to 1969. Tar distillation also reportedly occured there. Residuals from the manufactured gas operations and tar distillation have seeped below the ground surface and will require extensive remediation of the soil ($10-$15M). The site is also partly located in a floodplain and as such the design of the maintenance building includes a stormwater management system to collect rain from the roof and divert it to an underground chamber on the property. In addition, water used to wash buses and vans will be recycled. The facility will also have two 10,000-gallon underground storage tanks for diesel fuel and a 5,000-gallon underground storage tank for gasoline. All three underground tanks will be double-walled and be located outside the floodplain.
