Building Information Modeling/ Virtual Design & Construction
Skanska provided construction management at risk services for the phased construction of a new 106,486-SF school building built adjacent to the existing school, for a school student population of 680 students. 7,500-SF of the total square footage is for rooftop mechanical enclosures. Phase 1 included the construction of a new access roadway, sitework, temporary parking and play areas and separation of the site for the construction of the new school while the existing school remained open. Phase 2 included the construction of the new school, including site utilities, access road and parking facilities. Phase 3 included the demolition of the existing 65,000-SF school and another 4,500-SF of modular classrooms, including removal of hazardous materials, construction of new playfields and the completion of the site work. The new school includes administrative areas, nurse's station, classrooms, library, kitchen, cafeteria, gymnasium, art and music, special education, etc. The building received LEED Silver certification. The project incorporated various sustainable elements into the project’s design, such as rainwater harvesting systems, extensive recycling of building materials, daylighting, energy-efficient building systems and energy monitoring systems to provide students and staff with an enhanced environment while decreasing operating costs for the town. The energy monitoring system has an interface for students to interact with and learn about how buildings use energy.
